Hollywood is an enigma. Believe me, I've been there. A 15 year stab in the dark... I had a bumpy and interesting Hollywood career as a "D list" actor, screenwriter, director, and producer (sorry, no porn). After my first year there, I starred in a handful of straight-to-video movies. Cable television was just launching and everybody was buying cheapies to fill their timeslots.
In between movies, I drove a hospital limo, delivered singing telegrams throughout the Southland, and painted houses in the valley. I wrote screenplays and songs in my small apartment off Hollywood Boulevard. Some days I auditioned for movies, tv shows and commercials. Some nights I sang in honkytonks. I left town often, not just for location scouting and shoots, but to escape the incessant madness I lived in. I found great pleasure exploring unknown America. And that I surely did...
After several years, I started working in the studio system at Disney, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures and CBS. It is not an occupation for the faint of heart. I got a big kick out of the absurdity of it all. When you break it down, "movie stars" are just sold goods. Keeping a career alive takes money, maneuvering, p.r., decent scripts, and a wealth of talent surrounding you. And there it is - the film... A manufactured commodity that needs to be marketed, packaged, distributed and sold.
I can go on and on about my experiences. In the end, I just woke up empty on an overcast day and withered away from it. I was literally stuck in a tree in India one day, surrounded by hundreds of peasant farmers wanting my autograph. "This is how Tom Cruise lives day in, day out," I realized. I didn't "need" to be liked anymore. I didn't "need" to be loved. What I needed was an escape from my ego-driven lifestyle. I don't regret having done it. I wish I was paid better. I wish I had been in a memorable, life-changing picture. But those opportunities never came my way. Maybe I'll write a book someday. HOW NOT TO MAKE IT IN HOLLYWOOD... Oh well, at least I did it...
